I finally saw this movie. It won tons of awards in the past year and I was a little unsure as to why. Nearly everyone I’ve spoken to says they’ve seen it, but the conversation generally ends there.

So… the general premise of this film is a dysfunctional family finds their mother in a coma, and while she’s in it, her husband finds out that she had been having an affair. It’s the family coming to terms his wifes condition and his new role of primary guardian and care giver to his two daughters.

I think GC does a great job in this movie, but who I really loved was Shailene Woodley. I’ll be honest, I have never watched that TV show she stars in, Pregnant American Teenagers, American Life of Pregnant Teenagers… something like that. But she was great in this film. I don’t know how she did it, but somehow she gave it teenage angst, drama, love, sadness, etc. She just nailed it.

This is a good watch if you’re in the mood to totally chill out and maybe tear up a bit. It’s a long movie and a bit of a wearing story line, so prepare yourself with some popcorn and a blanket.

But there were a bunch of funny bits, a bunch of tender bits, and a bunch of “why is that teenage girl being such a butthead” bits. So you should probably watch it.

See? Tender bit.

It’s worth watching if not to just be reminded of this amazing moment at the Oscars.
